Things That Distract Me

My comic production has decreased as I have attempted to conquer the 300 Drawing Prompts; I thought I should share with you the fruits of those labors.

The Dreaded Clipshow

It is true!  I did not draw and upload a comic yesterday.  I am unlikely to draw and upload a comic in the few minutes I have before driving to work.  Today I work with Maren, and hopefully that will supply me with plenty of material.

The Blank Slate

Sometimes, more often lately, I sit down; I get out my pens; I get out the paper; I turn on the lamp; I set myself to drawing, and what I come up with is this:

A whole lotta nothing, and a vaguely discomforting drawing of inspiration fleeing my brain.  Hope the 300 drawing prompts will help.  You remember the 300 drawing prompts, right?  Ross gave them to me.  He also gave me this poster he made:

How cool is that?  I envy the mind that can make an interesting display of the everyday.  It is often a goal of my photography, and I think we could all do more with displaying our knowledge such that others are encouraged to interact with it and us.  Did that make sense?  I think I need to chew on this idea more.

300 Drawing Prompts

My buddy Ross gave me a journal of 300 drawing prompts!  It is pretty cool.  There are some odd ones in there, but it will help me on those days when I am struggling to draw anything.  Once I draw something, like Dr.Seuss hats, it is pretty natural for one of my characters to appear to offer unsolicited commentary.

Power Poses

I thought I had a strong concept for a whole series of poses.  As it turned out, I had an idea.  Just one pose.  The realization lead to the last panel.  From there I only need one more pose to complete a short form comic!  So I went with Peter Panning, something I find myself doing accidentally with alarming regularity.

Hell Smells Like Hot Almond Milk

This is another good example of my process when I am low on time and ideas.  I drew myself wearing goggles.  Then I added the mask, and asked myself, "why?"  Why would I wear protective gear?  Maybe I am holding something dangerous?  I am well known for disliking everything.  What distaste of mine can justify goggles and a dust mask?  I went with almond milk, which I really discovered smells terrible steamed, and is generally detested by my team.  A few of us like it cold, but we can not support it as a latte.  I drew each panel once, because of poor time budgeting.  There you go.  If you write or draw or paint... however you create, do more than nothing.  It is harder to shape nothing than something.  Get something in front of you, and get to work.

The Creative Process

I have been all over the place at work.  It is good for me, but it means I have not had constant exposure to any of my coworkers, my main inspiration.  So I literally just started drawing.  My actual first three panels were these:

As you can see, I had no direction.  So I drew Ben, thinking maybe I would do some sort of coffee tasting sequel, or even a series.  My first rendering was not a success, but I went ahead and added speech.  My drawings often berate me for my inability to draw.  Then I tried again, somehow less successfully.  By my third drawing of Ben, I did not even really have a plan anymore.  Behold the might of my creative process!
