Postcards: Happy Birthday, Ross

Timing is not my strength, ok?

So, more attempts at layering.  First, my usual step one, get rid of the white.

I dunno why I wanted the card to be read more than one way, but I did, and so I started flipping elements.

To avoid relying entirely on stamps, I started comparing paper elements to layer on top.

Boom!  All kinds of stuff going on.

Postcards: Cut-outs

As I mentioned in the Draft Cow post, lately I have been making postcards by just cutting images out of magazines and comics.  I think they are fun and interesting, but they do not count as my art; I try not to send them in response to any original art mailed to me.

Those are all from a National Geographic.  The image below is the cover of a comic book, but I did move the text from off-card to the bottom of the image.

Postcards: Draft Cow

I mentioned in a previous post that it is difficult for me to use vintage ads, because I like so many of them just the way they are.  Look at this cow ad!

Pretty great, right?  All I did was move things around to fit all the pieces onto a postcard.  I do not think of this style of card as my art.  I still like doing it, but more for the preservation and sharing aspects of mailing bits of history to family and friends.

Postcards: Discriminate Against Typewriters

I love playing with old ads.  There's something about 'em.  It can be tricky actually using them; i think I am more easily inspired to remix contemporary media in a vintage style than I am to collage using exclusively vintage elements.

I began with this ad.  You can faintly see the edges of the postcard underneath.

First up, let us change the discrimination!

Then hide the label with someone at a desk.  Add a pencil for good measure.

Postcards: Dipping My Toes in the Pool of Complexity

When I can produce something like this reliably, I will have accomplished an artistic goal.

First I dirtied up the postcard, and used some stamps.  This was just to created a non-white card; I was comfortable with these elements potentially being completely covered by the end of the design.

I tore out a bit of map to line the bottom of the card.  I specifically wanted that torn paper look along the top edge.

Look, a cool dude.

I took this single graphic and chopped it up to have related elements spread around the composition.

From there to assembly!

Postcards: A Few Purchases

I have been alternating being busy and sick lately, it feels like.  Here are a few cards I purchased and sent to carry us until Thursday.

Postcards: Woman's Choice Cocaine

I dunno.  It got away from me.  Several bits didn't quite click.  This is a mashed together puzzle.

Postcards: Screaming Alchemy

Just trying to catch up still.

And, in this case, trying to find a useful white.  There are lots of crap whites out there.

Not A Postcards

Part of the collage exchange!  I have catching up to do.  So much... much.
