Postcards: I Am Terrible

Being terrible at something does not always diminish my enthusiasm.  Sometimes, I seem to forget that I am terrible at something and throw myself into it.  Once it is again revealed I have not really honed any skills outside of photography I go back to being salty, but for a while there I'm all about terribly doing something.

I kickstarted The Sketching Tin, and so I was jazzed about getting some new art supplies.  I thought I should practice my watercolor drawing skillz.  I took a portrait of myself, using my phone as the kids are want to do these days, and started drawing.

Pretty cool, right?  I thought it was cool.  Off to a good start, certainly.  Oh, if I could go back and just stop right here.

But I didn't stop right there.  I lost control of the thing, and ended up sending Aaron a pretty goofy portrait.  I still like the teeth.

The Hats

While this was not the occasion, I have indeed drawn blue tattoos on my face.

Another recording of a spill on the counter.

This is what I look like in a dark bar wearing a friend's glasses.

Treacle Farls are just not a very Wisconsin food.  Had to have someone track down what they were.  To do so, I employed to use of a Press Hat.  Thus begins drawing hats.

I am a surly looking Rudolph.

I actually own this hat!  I stole it from a bear.

Once again I try to set customer expectations at a reasonable level.  The later you eat, the less food is available.

Sweaty Cthulhu

As you can see, I'm just trying to keep people in-the-know.

Customers can be learned from.

A cat on my chest while I nap with a hat on.

You know him.  You love him.  It's the Black Dragon.

There was spilled coffee on the counter that looked suspiciously like a nervously sweating Cthulhu.

In my opinion, my forehead is not this ginormous.

Hear we see a complete lack of evidence that I've taken a year's worth of life drawing classes.

It is not uncommon for a lack oatmeal to be received as if it is a sign of the Apocalypse.

Starting to find a groove, I feel.  Still primarily in announcements mode, with scatterings of sketches.

Dusting off the blog

Hello!  Welcome to the very first post in the Barista Powers blog.  I have no idea what to do right now; hopefully we will learn together in a comedic and memorable fashion.
For you first timers, Barista Powers is a collection of drawings and comics I've made at or for my workplace.  I'm a barista / cashier / popcorn popper, along with various other jobs as they arise.  As you read thru, you'll see that the first notes were just doodles of what I could see, and drawings of myself talking about how I didn't know what was going.  I felt it helped set customer expectations appropriately.  As time goes, the notes became an expectation of my customers. Oops.  And so feedback and demand slowly shaped my notes into a comic, with recurring characters and themes.
This first round is of the doodling variety.  They stuck me on Register Four, unknown to many customers, and so I sat watched.  A group of guys regularly sat nearby and talked about programming and video games.  As I drew them, I'd record their more entertaining phrases.
