I mentioned to Jane that I often turn to beetles when I'm in an artistic slump, and so she demanded no beetles in my reply to her latest postcard. I mentioned that I had once done a few drawings using words as the shading, and she declared it acceptable to draw a beetle made out of words.
So I penciled in this beetle.
And then I added text from The King In Yellow, and, dissatisfied with the tonal values, added watercolors to make it all more distinct.
I feel like I haven't used this technique in a million years, and the last time I remember using it the piece was much larger; it was easier to get more distinct tones over large areas.
Yeah, that was me with a Christmas hat over my eyes and wearing glasses.
