Postcards: Just a shell

Sometimes inspiration strikes!  Sometimes it doesn't.  I was sent the card from this video.  Pretty cool, right?  So I responded with an equally cool card and video, right?  Right?  Guys?  No?  I had a shell and I drew that shell, but it was far from stunning.

Postcards: Ads

Every now and then I just want to share materials from vintage magazines as-is.  For some reason, magazines are almost never conveniently formatted for gluing articles and images to a 4x6 piece of paper.  What's that all about?  With the previous formatting woes in action, I chopped up and glued back together these ads in an attempt to capture as much of the feeling of the original as possible.

Postcards:The Rat

Our apartment is filled with art, and so I picked up one of the little sculptures we have and sat down to draw.  Here is a little rat sculpture, sitting on top of a box camera.

Postcards: Animal Frame

I was so pleased with how the layered card for Matthias turned out, I tried the technique again.  Did I plot it all out again?  No.  And I paid for it.

I really like these old prints and wanted to use them for a frame.

Such a graphically laid out person, and looking off the page!  A delightful element.  Does it have anything to do with the previously chosen frame?  Well...

The foreground and midground combined leave almost no visible background.

So I used a bunch of eyeballs, hoping at least the black and white aspect would relate the back to the front.

Eh.  Eh.  It looks like a frame with a stock photo like you would find at Michaels.

Postcards: A Toy Horse

This is a horse that has been in the family a while.  Honestly, I wish I had researched/recorded a little more about its path to me.  It's heavy, brown and gold.  I cleaned it up a little before drawing it.  I decided to draw it in response to postcard that was partially colored with wine; I was inspired to use the walnut ink made by my father.  I really tried to build it up to portray the highlights and shadows of the metal.  Mixed success.  The wheels were very challenging.

Fun Fact: similar horses are sold as Indian Temple Toys.

Postcards: Goblin Candleholder as a Bookend

Goblin Guy!  I love this guy.  He's a troll goblin bookend incense burner candle holder thing.  A common subject for me.  Goblin Guy.  Not bookend incense burner candle holder things.  There are not a lot of items I return to regularly in my drawings, but Goblin Guy is a favorite.
